Questions to ask yourself
- Do you actually NEED to grow the team, or can you automate?
- If you need to hire, do you need a FTE, or can you outsource it to a contractor?
- What is your budget, and where can you get the most bang for your buck?
- For contractors, “hire fast, fire fast”. Especially if they are building out the software, you’re grading based on results. A 30-day window should be enough time for you to evaluate whether they are the right fit or not.
- For FTE, “hire slow, fire fast”. You’re going to spend more time finding, training, and incentivizing employees. Don’t rush into a shotgun marriage if it isn’t the perfect fit.
- If you want a better talent pipeline, be a regular online where these people hangout. If you’re looking for PMs, join Lenny’s private community. If you’re looking for remote workers, hang out in NomadList. If you want access to more devs, contribute in Stackoverflow.
- If you want somebody else to focus on hiring for you, use an agency or job board. You’ll have less control over who you speak with, but these are generally good options. Be prepared to spend money.
